High-School Student learns

what it takes to run a guide service

By Ashley Weed

At my high school, seniors do an internship during the last three weeks of school. An opportunity to learn about a business that interests you. So when I found about Southwest Trekking I thought it would be the perfect internship. Not only would I get to spend time doing what I enjoy, I also would get to learn about what it is like to be a guide, something I have dreamed of doing in either Central or South America.

Now that my internship is coming to an end I have a learned a lot more than I expected. I was able to go on and even lead an one hour hike called “Awake and Aware.” This is a short hike up Ventana Canyon where you learn about the Flora and Fauna of the Sonoran Desert. Along with doing the obvious things you relate with a guide service I also got to do the behind the scenes work; meeting the people who promote Southwest Trekking at the local resorts, scheduling guides, making this newsletter, and yes, even cleaning vehicles.

I have learned a lot these last three weeks about business and all the work that goes into the final product. I will definitely pursue my interest in being a guide during my college summers. Thanks a million Southwest Trekking! It was a blast.
